Gaming: Pre-Production Feature Development Workshop with Martin Mittner

One of the most difficult things to do when designing a video game is to get to the heart of what makes your game fun. Often, designers get caught up in all the minutia of high quality production. But, let’s pretend you took away the shiny graphics, the over produced sound, and even the controller. What makes a game worth playing is its core features.  The mechanics that make it fun. In this workshop we will learn about an effective way to prototype game features at a very low cost, so that your development can build a strong game with a good sense of why it’s fun.

Figure Drawing with JoAnna Almasude

JoAnna Almasude is an internationally exhibited professional fine artist with over 30 years of experience. Her professional artwork has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States, Japan, Italy, England, Spain, Morocco and Oman. Her work includes figure drawing and illustration, painting (oil) and sculpture (bronze). She has also worked as a web designer and web animator for various schools and universities.

Cinema 4D, presented by MAXON

A wide-ranging introduction to the fundamentals of 3D in Cinema 4D Lite. While you won’t see some of the more advanced Cinema 4D features, you’ll learn how to complete many essential tasks like importing models, animating cameras, and rendering animations.

Z-Brush with Alexis Centeno, presented by SPINE

Focus: Character Sculpting
Demo slash brief walkthrough of the ZBrush character sculpting workflow from 2D illustration (image planes and/ character sheets) to render-ready complete ZBrush sculpt; ready for retopoloy or 3Dprinting.

Unity for Non-Programmers: Rigging a 2D Character with Erwin Santacruz, presented by SPINE

One key skill in the creative industry is not only mastering your craft and tools but being able to keep up with evolving technology. Recent trends in the advancement of game engines is blurring the lines between the various industries such as motion graphics, VFX, interactive, and game development.

Today, the quality and speed of realtime game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine are creating new creative and financial opportunities for artists from different disciplines as new markets open up. No longer are these game engines the sole domain of game designers and developers. This is making it essential for facilities and individuals to understand how these new technologies function even if only at a fundamental level.

In this introductory workshop we will discuss a few basic concepts of Unity and then take a 2D character created in an application such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or Toon Boom Harmony and setup a Unity character rig making it ready for animation. We will first go over how to prepare artwork prior to importing into Unity. Then once inside Unity, we will discuss the parenting hierarchy along with setting up pivots for the character’s individual limbs. You will not need any prior knowledge of programming for this workshop.
